The First 10 Pounds

Well, it’s been a bit of a struggle – particularly these past few weeks with travel to Las Vegas and Los Angeles in July – but I got back on track and now I’ve officially lost more than 10 pounds since we started the @fatroll contest and Web site. Weee! A few things I’ve learned with the first 10 pounds:

  • The combination of eating right and diligent exercise truly is key. You can’t do one or the other (or none at all) and expect that by some miracle (or weight loss drug) you’ll lose weight. And you can’t deprive yourself or go overboard – you’ll just set yourself up for failure.
  • Doing this with friends and sharing our struggles and experiences via the Web site and get-togethers keeps you on track and honest with yourself.
  • Using the appropriate tools, literature and expert guidance allow you to lose weight consistently without getting frustrated. (Keep in mind I said “using” as opposed to “having.” Having the LoseIt app on your phone but not “using” it regularly doesn’t do you any good and gets you more frustrated.)
  • You’ll have set backs that frustrate you and make you want to quit – so having the appropriate motivators in place (cough, picture of a bikini posted online) will keep you from giving up.
  • Find new goals to help keep you motivated and going. The @fatroll challenge was a great way to get started, but I definitely got re-motivated once I decided to do a separate challenge with Justin and participate in three half-marathons this winter.

Here’s to another 10 pounds!!
